Umpqua
River Cycling Vacation:
A
five-day, intermediate/advanced bike trip in southern
Oregon.
Winner Outside Magazine's 2005 Bike Trip of the
Year
Western Spirit's Umpqua River trip takes you on
some of the best singletrack we ride anywhere in
the country. A world-class bike trip.
Riding Surface: Singletrack, mostly firm pack, some
loose pumice and smooth pine duff. Some sections
are rocky and grassy. Some dirt roads and a few
miles of pavement.

So,
were you to go to Oregon and ride the Umpqua, you'd
be riding Trail X:
So
named by Bike Magazine (Sept/Oct 2005)
They didn't give the name of the trail
to preserve it's identity for those really resourceful
enough to sleuth out it's location. It's the epitome
of why we ride singletrack, and should be reserved
for those who really want it. This is not the Sunday
rider outing, located in the remote backcountry
river gorge of the Umpqua River, it's meant for
riders who want to really get out there. And stay
out there. The campsites are as good as the trail,
riverside and shady. Amenities of civilized bathrooms
(so may argue the mirrors aren't necessary!), the
river to throw yourself in and to stare at with
a cold beer in your hand. The roar of the water
to put you to sleep at night.
The trail sections are named, "dread and terror"
being the most famous, and they give you a sense
of the environment in which you're living for five
days. The Deer Leep Section is fast, fun and throws
in the gut buster climb to remind you that what
goes down must go up. The Hot Springs Section...
well.
At the river's edge, the trail gives you the classic
feel of Oregon: lush, mossy, green and ferned with
side streams cascading down the hillsides next to
the trail. The basalt rock erodes in a fashion that
makes waterfalls likely, so the Oregon travel council
has printed a brochure of world class water falls
to visit. One of our guests was having so much fun
on the trail, he blew by 135 foot Lemolo Falls.
People travel a long way to hike to this falls,
but funny, he didn't seem to mind, riding's too
fun.
The salmon are another magical part of the Umpqua
experience. They come all the way up the river from
the Ocean and we can see them schooling in the pools
below the trail.
